DS redesign or new system on route

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

According to a videogame analyst, a new DS design, or completely new hardware, could launch as early as the end of 2008.

“We think that the timing of a new product introduction will depend upon the sales profile for the DS, and believe that lower than expected DS hardware sales could trigger an earlier launch for the new device,” said Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter in a research note.

The lower than expected hardware sales are currently occurring in Japan, where both DS hardware and software sales have cooled while Sony’s competing handheld, the PSP, has maintained a healthy lead for the past few months.

Pachter added that Japanese DS demand will likely decline further, and force Nintendo’s hand in the region. “We think that Nintendo has a new handheld device ready for launch in Japan before the end of the calendar year.”

Holographic storage by Nintendo?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Nintendo is apparently looking into the growing field of holographic storage to solve the Wii storage issue.

Holographic storage is a new way of storing data in which that data is contained in a 3-D space, as opposed to on the surface of a disk, as is the case in the PS3 or Xbox 360’s HDDs. The technique is pretty cutting edge, but once it becomes mainstream it could be capable of mutli-terabyte storage.

Where Nintendo comes into this story is that its name has appeared alongside holographic storage company InPhase Technologies on a joint patent filing. The filing is for a scanner to read holographic discs.

This is not real surprising news as he hasn’t been used on television since April. It is believed he was never under an official contract with the company and was simply working on a pay-per-appearance agreement.

Another crappy Hulk Hogan movie

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Stereo Vision Entertainment, Inc. a film production company focused exclusively on developing high quality, low cost, polarized 3D feature films, announced today that the undefeated Mixed Martial Arts phenomenon, Kimbo Slice, will be co-starring with Hulk Hogan in Stereo Vision’s hilarious kids’ comedy “Kung Fu U” in 3D.

“Kung Fu U” in 3D is a Disney-type comedy about of a bunch of nerds and misfits that are sent away by their wealthy parents to the Brentwood Academy (a.k.a. Kung Fu U) to learn the finer arts of self-defense. It’s a heart-warming romp where the rather weathered warriors come to the rescue for the kids, and in turn, the kids rescue the warriors’ seemingly lost souls from what had been their eternal apathy. It’s a feel-good story that reminds us that we’re all the same, no matter what our age, or where we came from, and that we should all stick together.

Stereo Vision’s Chairman, “Baywatch” creator Doug Schwartz, stated, “We’re very happy to have Kimbo Slice co-starring in ‘Kung Fu U.’ He has an enormous media presence, and he’ll fit right in with our star Hulk Hogan, and the other cast members in our made for kids 3D movie. We hope to have ‘Kung Fu U’ in 3D in theatres by the fall of ‘09.”

Mediaset is suing YouTube

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Google’s YouTube troubles just got kicked up a notch.

Italian media company Mediaset is suing YouTube and its owner, Google, for at least 500 million euros ($779 million).

Mediaset claims that Google and YouTube carried out the “illegal distribution and commercial use of audio and video files,” according to a Bloomberg report.

According to a sample analysis run by Mediaset on June 10, at least 4,643 videos belonging to the company were found on YouTube. That equals more than 325 hours of broadcasting without corresponding rights, the company said.

Mediaset claims that, based on the number of its clips available on YouTube and the hits generated, the broadcaster lost the equivalent of 315,672 broadcasting days.

The claim of 500 million euros corresponds to “immediate damages,” Mediaset said in the statement.
