Add achievements and they will come

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research has found titles that implement goals properly average significantly greater sales out of the retail gate.

For developers of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles, focusing on achievements and trophies may not guarantee blockbuster hits. However, there’s a strong correlation between games that sell well and games that offer numerous and diverse accomplishments, according to a new study from Electronic Entertainment Design and Research.

Looking at the first three months of US retail sales for all Xbox 360 games released through March of this year, EEDAR found that games with numerous achievements tended to move more copies. On average, games that included more than 30 achievements sold three times as many copies as those with 30 or fewer in-game goals. Developers are apparently picking up on the trend, as the first three months of 2008 saw more than 60 percent of Xbox 360 games released with more than 40 achievements, compared to 52 percent for all of 2007 and 42 percent for 2006.

NHL’s Gonchar out 4-6 months

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will have arthroscopic surgery on his dislocated left shoulder Thursday and miss four to six months of the upcoming season.

Gonchar, one of the NHL’s top offensive defensemen, has cartilage and ligament damage and had hoped to avoid surgery. He was hurt during a hit by Tampa Bay’s David Koci in an exhibition game against Tampa Bay on Sept. 20. He could be out until March, which would sideline him for most of the season.

Cedric Benson signs with Bengals

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Running back Cedric Benson signed Tuesday with the Cincinnati Bengals, who needed another runner and were undeterred by two alcohol-related arrests in Texas that prompted the Chicago Bears to let him go.

Benson will take the spot of running back DeDe Dorsey, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after hurting his hamstring in a 20-12 loss to Cleveland. Chris Perry is Cincinnati’s starting running back.

Benson was Chicago’s first-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Texas. He started 12 games for the Bears from 2005-07, running for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He missed five games with an ankle injury last season, but had a career-high 674 yards. Benson was arrested in May on charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and again in June on a drunken driving charge in Austin, Texas.

Two grand juries in Travis County, Texas, declined to indict Benson on the charges last week, ending the cases.

T.O. still causing trouble?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Terrell Owens’ frustration with the Dallas Cowboys offense carried over from the field to the locker room Sunday.

Owens, despite having 18 passes thrown his way in the loss to Washington, had what was deemed a serious conversation about the offense with quarterback Tony Romo after the game, according to multiple sources.

The types of routes and throws are what concerns Owens, the sources said. The receiver, who the sources said was venting to Romo about his frustrations, has not liked how some of the throws were coming from the quarterback as far back as the season opener.

But Owens said Sunday he is still confident in Romo.

In the loss to the Redskins, Owens finished with seven catches for 71 yards and one touchdown.

Former NFL draft bust Tony Mandarich says he used steroids at Michigan State and faked a drug test before the 1988 Rose Bowl.

Tony Mandarich, the Packers’ first-round pick in 1989, says he was addicted to alcohol and painkillers during his time in the NFL.

He also said during an interview on “Inside the NFL” that will air Wednesday on Showtime that he did not use steroids in the NFL but was addicted to alcohol and painkillers.

Mandarich, whose autobiography will be released in March, said he provided a fake urine sample to evade detection before the ‘88 Rose Bowl in which Michigan State beat Southern California 20-17. Mandarich said he couldn’t confirm a report that other players did the same.

The offensive lineman was the No. 2 overall pick in 1989 by the Packers. He lasted just three years with Green Bay amid rumors of steroid use.

Michael Cole talks WWF?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Cole accidently said “WWF” during the 8-man tag match. He said, “In fact, Cody Rhodes said the tag team division, in a recent interview in WWF… WWE Magazine, stunk until Rhodes and DiBiase came along.” The remark was uttered at 10:01 p.m. just before Punk tried rolling up Manu.

Maybe he longs for the good ole days when wrestling was wrestling and not sports entertainment.

“I am very disappointed to miss the Iskandar Johor Open and the HSBC event as I was looking forward to returning to Asia,” the 45-year-old Singh said in a news release issued by the Asian Tour on Tuesday.

“As disappointing as it will be to miss the tournaments it is important I follow my doctor’s instructions and do what is best for my long-term health.”
