Friday, October 31st, 2008

The main event match of Kurt Angle vs. Abyss which featured Scott Steiner’s return drew a 1.18 rating, meaning the show retained most of the audience that tuned in for Foley and Sting.

I’m a PC and I’m right outside your store!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The Apple / Microsoft ad war keeps escalating while Apple continues to insist that John Hodgman is the human representation of all PCs, Microsoft is taking its populist approach to the streets. Very specific streets, actually it’s placing “I’m a PC” recording booths outside of Apple stores, like the one pictured here in Birmingham, England. The booth is staffed with three ‘Softies who’ll try to sell you on the latest in Windows tech while making nyah-nyah faces at Apple store patrons, and guests are invited to make a short video explaining why they, too, are PCs.

Smackdown continues downward spiral

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Last week’s edition of SmackDown drew a 2.1 rating in the fast nationals. I’m guessing that’s why they had HHH vs The Undertaker; just to see if anybody is watching! Now I wonder how they feel about switching networks?

Raw rating

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

This week’s edition of WWE Monday Night RAW drew a 2.9 cable rating, which is the same rating the show drew last week. The first hour drew a 2.83 rating and the second hour drew a 2.95 rating with an average of 4,129,000 viewers.

This is yet another disappointing number for WWE. RAW had been in the 3.1 range in previous weeks and the dip below the 3.0 mark has to be alarming for the company.

ECW rating

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

ECW on Sci-Fi broadcast drew a 1.2 cable rating. Let’s see; get Matt Hardy a belt that fits, quit wasting too much time one Miz and Morrison standing in the ring trying out their new comedy routine and lastly get some talent on the show! These suggestions could help improve ECW; or Vince can just pull the plug on the show.

Former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin officially filed his complaint Wednesday to claim his lost salary from the team following his firing.

The complaint was completed Wednesday. It was filed through the NFL Coaches Association and will go straight to commissioner Roger Goodell. No timetable is set for hearings and there is a good chance the case won’t be heard before the end of the year.

Kiffin is seeking approximately $2.6 million of salary he is owed under terms of his contract.

Sony takes financial hit

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Sony wasn’t joking when it said last week that it was in for a grim fiscal year 2008. As a portent of things to come, the Japanese electronics company revised its profits projections downward an additional 39 percent for the year, which runs April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, in all putting them off a full 59 percent from last year’s performance.

Keeping in line with those expectations, Sony said today that net profits for the July-September quarter slid 72 percent, falling to ¥20.8 billion ($213 million) from ¥73.7 billion ($755 million) a year ago. Total revenue stood at ¥2.07 trillion ($21.3 billion), off half a percentage point from last year. Operating income skidded 90 percent year over year, falling to ¥11 billion ($113 million) from ¥111.6 billion ($1.14 billion).

Sony’s bread-and-butter electronics segment, which accounts for the bulk of the company’s revenues, saw a .6 percent decline in sales for the reporting period, dipping to ¥1.7 trillion ($17.4 billion). The decline comes despite stronger sales of the Bravia LCD TVs and Vaio PCs. As the company noted last week, the yen’s strengthen in the global market as well as tighter profit margins due to increased competition contributed to the company’s lackluster performance in this area.

Gamers will be pleased to know that Sony’s games segment actually saw some gains during the period. For the quarter, Sony’s games arm generated ¥269 billion ($2.76 billion), a 10 percent increase year over year. Naturally, the publisher attributed its performance to rising sales of the PlayStation 3 and PSP, with the former shifting 2.43 million units and the latter moving 3.18 million systems. PlayStation 2 sales continued to dwindle during the quarter, falling to 2.5 million units.

Netflix HD!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Xbox 360 owners got a double-dose of news today, both firmware and hardware-related. First up is word that the forthcoming New Xbox Experience will be offering Netflix video streaming in high-definition at the same time as other media-delivery platforms.

Unfortunately, the HD Netflix streaming will require a robust high-speed Internet connection with about 8-10 Mbps of bandwidth. It also won’t be available to PCs and Macs which use the service.

Two weeks before the NXE launches, Microsoft will begin offering a long-rumored stand-alone hard drive bundle for the 360. Inventively called the Xbox 360 Hard Drive 60GB Live Pack, the package comes with a 60GB HDD, a 3-month Xbox Live Gold subscription, a wired Xbox Live headset and an ethernet cable.
