Assassins Creed 2 inbound?

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Ubisoft reported profits for the first half of its fiscal year (the six months ended September 30), and acknowledged development on a key part of its profit plan in future quarters, the much-anticipated follow-up to Assassin’s Creed.

While economic woes seem to be keeping other publishers down, Ubisoft has yet to feel the slowdown’s effects. Following up on its second-quarter financial report, the publisher today cast a bit more light on its bottom line for the first half, posting operating income of $31.9 million, nearly double that of the $16.1 million it raked in for the same stretch of the previous year.

While those numbers don’t account for the last two months of volatility in the economy, Ubisoft executives were optimistic about their holiday sales outlook. In a question-and-answer session with analysts at the end of a conference call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and CFO Alain Martinez said that retailers are being cautious with their day-one orders, but it hasn’t been a big issue as they’re also quick to reorder when stock runs low. On top of that, they said all indications are that Ubisoft is on track to achieve its guidance for the year.

As for future years, one analyst asked if the second installment of Assassin’s Creed would be released in Ubisoft’s fiscal 2010. Guillemot flatly refused to give even a hint about the project, but did confirm it was in development.

“We’re not answering that question,” Guillemot said. “What we can say is that we are working hard on the product.”

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

You would imagine the suits at Hollywood close movie deals in top-secret meetings, but Jeff Katz, Vice President at New Line Cinema, has revealed he put together the Gears of War movie deal over Xbox Live. Katz told MTV:

“I do business on Xbox Live. When I was at New Line, I put the ‘Gears of War‘ deal together for the movie over Xbox Live,” said Katz. “It’s been good to me, so I’m loyal to it.”

The Gears of War film is being co-financed and co-produced by Legendary Pictures. Len Wiseman is directing with Chris Morgan writing the script. First draft was penned by Stuart Beattie.

Volunteers nab ex Raider coach

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Tennessee has reached an agreement with former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin to take over as the Volunteers’ next coach, with an announcement planned for Monday, barring any snags, according to multiple sources.

Kiffin, 33, will be making his college head coaching debut in succeeding Phillip Fulmer, who will coach his last game for the Vols on Saturday.

I wonder if Tennessee has a crazy overlord like Al Davis?

Terrorist attacks in India

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Teams of gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant, hospitals and a crowded train station in coordinated attacks across India’s financial capital Wednesday night, killing at least 101 people and taking Westerners hostage, police said.

Media reports said that gunmen also seized the Mumbai headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch and that shots had been heard coming from the building.

Representatives of the New York-based group referred questions to their Web site, which said the Israeli consulate had earlier been in touch with the rabbi who lived in the house, “but the line was cut in middle of the conversation. No further contact has since been established.”

A group of suspected Muslim militants claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans at the hotels and restaurant, witnesses said.
