Philadelphia police detectives met with the city’s district attorney’s office about a month ago to present their final evidence relating to an April 29 shooting outside a business in North Philadelphia owned by Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison that injured three people.

District Attorney Lynne Abraham has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Philadelphia to announce the results of the investigation.

Police detectives working on the case have been pressing the district attorney for months to bring the investigation to a close, but they recently concluded that the district attorney was not prepared to act until after the end of Harrison’s NFL season. The Colts lost in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday night in San Diego.

Police detectives have longed believed they had enough evidence to bring weapons charges against Harrison. But witnesses have been less than cooperative with the authorities, sources said, and that has led to uncertainty surrounding the evidence in the case.

A spokesman for the district attorney declined comment Tuesday night.

In May, Philadelphia police detectives reported that six of the bullet casings found after the April 29 shooting on the street corner across the street from Harrison’s car wash and garage came from a gun a rare, armor piercing Belgian made pistol that Harrison surrendered to police. The police have been intent on solving the case because they want to discourage ownership of such guns.

In interviews with police, Harrison has maintained that he was not involved in the shooting, sources say. But Pennsylvania gun laws specifically state that if Harrison’s gun was discharged in the act of a crime, he could be charged even if he was not the shooter.

In October, one of the victims of the shooting filed a $100,000 civil suit against Harrison, claiming that he suffered “serious and permanent injuries and severe shock to his nerves and nervous system” as a result of the shooting. The alleged victim, Dwight Dixon, claims he was shot in the left hand. Harrison has acknowledged he was involved in a fight with Dixon at Harrison’s bar, Playmakers in North Philadelphia, two weeks prior to the shooting, but said he did not have anything to do with the shooting. “It’s our position that Marvin Harrison was the shooter,” Dixon’s attorney, Robert M. Gamburg, told the Philadelphia Daily News in October.

The Wall Street Journal has the scoop on an upcoming book from two IBM engineers that spills the beans on one of the most shocking events in the video game industry. In “The Race for a New Game Machine,” David Shippy and Mickie Phipps tell the story of the development of the Cell for Sony, revealing that the processor that powers the PlayStation 3 helped in the design of another central processor unit: Xenon, the three-core CPU that powers the Xbox 360. From the WSJ:

When the companies entered into their partnership in 2001, Sony, Toshiba and IBM committed themselves to spending $400 million over five years to design the Cell, not counting the millions of dollars it would take to build two production facilities for making the chip itself. IBM provided the bulk of the manpower, with the design team headquartered at its Austin, Texas, offices. Sony and Toshiba sent teams of engineers to Austin to live and work with their partners in an effort to have the Cell ready for the Playstation 3’s target launch, Christmas 2005.

But a funny thing happened along the way: A new “partner” entered the picture. In late 2002, Microsoft approached IBM about making the chip for Microsoft’s rival game console, the (as yet unnamed) Xbox 360. In 2003, IBM’s Adam Bennett showed Microsoft specs for the still-in-development Cell core. Microsoft was interested and contracted with IBM for their own chip, to be built around the core that IBM was still building with Sony.

All three of the original partners had agreed that IBM would eventually sell the Cell to other clients. But it does not seem to have occurred to Sony that IBM would sell key parts of the Cell before it was complete and to Sony’s primary videogame-console competitor. The result was that Sony’s R&D money was spent creating a component for Microsoft to use against it.

Like the iMac, the all-in-one IdeaCentre A600 combines a monitor and CPU in a thin system. It will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show from January 8 to 11 in Las Vegas.

Its wireless remote control is similar to Nintendo Wii’s Wii Remote, which allows users to interact with a video game by waving or pointing the game controller. Using motion-sensing technology, the Wii Remote becomes a racket when swinging during a tennis game, or a weapon when playing a fighting game.

“We have an example of a bowling game [where] you can wave the remote and that actually controls your game,” said Ninis Samuel, director of marketing strategy and programs.

The company is bundling some motion-based games with the PC to use with the remote-based gaming controller. Titles of the games weren’t immediately available.

Lenovo is trying to capitalize on the trend of entertainment options merging into the PC. Few are able to play motion-based games, which could make this motion-based game controller a pioneer.

In addition to controlling TV functions and video recordings on the PC, the remote control can also be used as an air mouse that moves the mouse pointer when waved. It has some advantages over a conventional mouse — it can function without being on a surface and be used at a distance — when sitting on a couch, for example.

If the air mouse wasn’t enough, the remote also works as a VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) handset. “If you have telephony software on your PC like Windows Live or Skype, you can use your remote to make those phone calls because it essentially can act as a phone,” Samuel said.

The IdeaCentre A600 starts at a price of US$999. The desktop has a 21.5-inch screen that supports 1920 by 1280-pixel resolution for high-definition video playback. It runs on Intel Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo mobile processors, supports up to 4GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It includes Wi-Fi wireless networking and runs on the Windows Vista OS.

According to sales-tracking website VGChartz.com, the Wii’s stellar holiday performance has pushed Wii Sports atop the all-time best-selling videogame chart. The NPD has yet to announce this fact, nor has Nintendo itself. The title, which has been bundled with every new Wii console outside of Japan and Korea, has sold well over 40 million copies (including non-bundled versions sold in the aforementioned countries). The previous number one title was another Nintendo-bundled title–Super Mario Bros., which was included with the NES for many early years of the system’s lifespan.

Like Super Mario Bros., Wii Sports comes under scrutiny because the majority of the game’s sales came because customers purchased it with the console. According to Wikipedia, the best selling games sold outside of bundles are Pokemon Red/Blue and Nintendogs, both of which were sold with multiple versions. Super Mario Bros. 3 is the top selling title to be sold by itself.

Microsoft enjoyed double the Xbox 360 units sold in Europe this holiday season, with over 8 million sold in the region to date.

The holiday season was kind to Microsoft this year, and they have the sales figures to prove it. Selling over double the units sold in the 2007 holiday crunch according to GfK Chart-Track data, the Xbox 360 now has a huge lead in Europe over the PS3.

Though it’s yet to be seen if the recent production cost drop for creating a PS3 will influence the price in the coming months, Sony will have to step up their game to stay competitive with Microsoft in the European market.

In an exchange of emails between Thompson and GamePolitics’ Dennis McCauley, the former attorney begins his first email with the statement in all caps “GOD STRIKES TAKE-TWO DOWN.” Thompson’s suggestion of God’s wrath is in reference to Take-Two’s recent stock drop.
