McCain stops campaigning in Michigan
Political director Mike DuHaime said surrender in some states was inevitable. “The overall environment we face is probably the worst environment for any Republican in 35 years,” he said.
Revealing that Republicans had raised $85 million in September, its best fundraising month in eight years, adviser Greg Strimple said it made sense not to spend time and cash where a win was unlikely.
Senator McCain had only one public event in Colorado, and was expected to spend the weekend at his ranch in Arizona, highly unusual with the race at full tilt.
Also yesterday, an Alaskan judge refused to block an abuse-of-power investigation against Senator McCain’s running-mate, Sarah Palin. Republican state legislators unsuccessfully argued it was being used to damage the governor.
The investigation is looking into whether she and others pressured the Public Safety Commissioner to sack a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce from her sister, and fired him when he refused.
